Mandarin plant (Chlorophytum amaniense ‘Fire Flash’) shows off colorful orange leaf stems (called petioles). This gives the plant an interesting, and eye-cacthing look. A relative of the famous Spider Plant, Mandarin only grows about a foot tall and wide making it a perfect plant for tabletops, wide mantles or window sills. It tolerates low light, and grows well in medium or bright light. Try to avoid a spot where it gets a lot of afternoon sun, however. Its lush green leaves are susceptible to sunburn. Water mandarin plant when the top inch or so of the potting mix dries to the touch. How much water depends on growing conditions. The warmer brighter the spot, the faster your plant will use water. It grows best when watered regularly, but holds up well if you forget about it for a week or two. Mandarin is sensitive to fluoride in the water so use distilled or let your water sit out for a couple days before using. Prune dead leaves when necessary and fertilize in the spring, continue throughout the growing the season. Easy and perfect for beginners!
