Asparagus is the veggie that keeps on giving! A hardy perennial, asparagus is a favorite among gardeners, producing tasty spears for 15 years or more with a little TLC. Known as a gourmet delight that can be pricey and hard to find fresh, asparagus is surprisingly easy to grow in most gardens - just make sure your spot has well drained, rich, sandy loam soil. The spot should include full sun with some protection from winds. If you have clay soils, creating a raised bed is always a great option. Three varieties available: Mary Washington - A heirloom variety considered a standard in both commercial and residential gardens. Disease resistant plus a high producer, Mary Washington is a favorite throughout the upper Midwest. Millennium - A variety of all male asparagus performing very well on all soil types, including heavier soils. Winter hardy plus will tolerate hot temperatures. Male asparagus spears will produce bigger, tender, straight and more uniform spears without the added seed pressure of the female plants. Purple Passion - A totally unique asparagus producing spears in delicate purple hues. Purple Passion has 20% higher sugar content making it perfectly good eaten raw and on salads. Spears are generally more tender & typically not found in grocery stores.
