Growing your own potatoes is a fun, easy and delicious project! We've selected three varieties known to be thrive in our Minnesota summer growing season. Either planted directly in the soil or a container (5 - 25 gallon Grow Bags work well), select a full sun location with good, rich and moist organic soil. If planting in the ground, select a location where you didn't grow tomatoes, peppers, eggplant or potatoes the previous year to help avoid disease. Norkotah Russett: Released in 1987 by NDSU and is now ranked second in popularity for fresh-market use. Early-maturing with an attractive medium-brown color and a long to oblong shape. Norkota has a creamy and moist texture when baked with a mildly chewy skin and white to pale yellow interior. Seven to nine months storage life. Red Norland: Compact plants make it an ideal potato variety for smaller gardens. Enjoy early yields of extra-large tubers with thin red skins and white, fine-quality flesh. The small eyes and thin skins make peeling easy. An excellent potato for boiling and salads. This early maturing variety is ready in just 70 day! Shows good resistance to scab. Yukon Gold: Plant these in your garden and you will have a good goldmine of yellow-skinned, yellow-fleshed potatoes ready to harvest in 100 days. These potatoes are perfect for browning, mashing or your favorite recipe.
