Heirloom. Camellia Flowered balsam has clusters of richly colored, double flowers that look like little roses peeking out among the leaves. It's easy to grow in any rich, moist soil in a shady or sunny garden, practically care-free, and blooms from summer into fall. Plant in groups to create an eye-catching swath of color that lure butterflies and other pollinators. Also called lady slippers, or touch-me-not because its seeds spring out of ripened pods with the slightest touch. Recommended to start inside 6 to 8 weeks before your average last frost date. Or sow outside 1 to 2 weeks after your average last frost date. Light aids germination; press seeds into soil surface.
